Ros-Lehtinen Iran Threat Reduction Act Reaches 100 Co-Sponsors U.S., Israel Claim Iran Draws Within Reach of Nuclear Capabilities
“Iran has made a mockery of its international obligations for far too long.
“Reports that Iran is within reach of nuclear capabilities are deeply disturbing, but unsurprising. Iran has been allowed to manipulate the system and delay at every turn as it has advanced its nuclear program unfazed.
“Iran poses a grave threat to the security of the U.S., our allies, and the entire world. In addition to its nuclear program, Tehran pursues illicit missile programs and other weapons programs, and assists violent Islamist extremist groups in the Middle East and beyond.
“The size and scope of actions taken by the U.S. and other responsible nations have failed to measure up to the size and scope of the threat.
“Over 100 of my Congressional colleagues understand the urgent need to strengthen our approach, close loopholes in our sanctions laws and tighten the noose on the Iranian regime to compel it to end its threatening behavior.”
Background: General Amos Yadlin, chief of Israel’s military intelligence, reportedly stated Tuesday that “Iran is at the moment very close to getting a military nuclear arsenal,” and that “Iran can manage to stabilise its military nuclear programme by 2010.” Yadlin stated in March that Iran has “crossed the technological threshold” concerning its nuclear program and “hopes to exploit the dialogue with the West and Washington to advance toward the production of an atomic bomb.” Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has also reportedly stated that Iran has likely enriched enough uranium to make an atomic bomb.
